A5 is the most popular flyer size in South Africa, and for good reason: it’s big enough for a headline, a photo, a price list and your contact details, but small enough to hand out, post or slip into a delivery bag. Here is everything you need to know to set up an A5 flyer that prints perfectly.
What size is an A5 flyer?
| Unit | A5 size |
|---|---|
| Millimetres | 148 × 210 mm |
| Centimetres | 14.8 × 21 cm |
| Inches | 5.8 × 8.3 in |
| Pixels at 300 dpi | 1748 × 2480 px |
| With 3 mm bleed | 154 × 216 mm |
A5 is exactly half of an A4 page. Fold an A4 sheet in half and you have A5.
A5 compared with other flyer sizes
- A6 (105 × 148 mm): postcard size. Cheap and handy for vouchers, but limited space.
- A5 (148 × 210 mm): the all-rounder for promotions, menus and events.
- A4 (210 × 297 mm): room for lots of detail, but more expensive to print and harder to hand out.
What is bleed, and why does it matter?
Printers cut flyers from larger sheets, and the blade can shift by a fraction of a millimetre. If your background colour or photo stops exactly at the edge, a thin white line can appear after cutting. Bleed fixes this: you extend the background 3 mm past every edge, so the cut always lands inside the colour.
For an A5 flyer, that means your document should be 154 × 216 mm, with the background stretched to the outer edge.
Keep important content in the safe zone
Keep text, logos and phone numbers at least 3–5 mm inside the trim line. Anything closer risks being cut off or looking cramped.
File checklist before you send it to print
- Document size 154 × 216 mm (A5 plus 3 mm bleed).
- Images at 300 dpi. Pictures copied from websites or WhatsApp are usually too low quality and print blurry.
- Colour mode CMYK for the most accurate print colours.
- Fonts outlined or embedded so they don’t change.
- Saved as a PDF with crop marks and bleed included.
- Spelling, phone number and prices checked twice.
Five tips for a flyer that gets results
- One message. Lead with the single offer you want people to remember.
- A big, clear headline that can be read from arm’s length.
- A reason to act now, such as a date, a limited offer or a voucher.
- Easy contact: your WhatsApp number and a QR code to your website or menu.
- Use the back. Double-sided printing gives you space for a price list or map at a small extra cost.
